This is an arresting piece of dark-pop music. The song addresses grief – and how it can turn us to become insular and alone and lose sight of the fact that there are people around us who care and love us.
“when i wrote ‘deceiving’, i was in a dark place. i felt trapped and alone, unsafe where i was living, and completely isolated in a new city. i remember feeling like no one really saw what i was going through, even though people probably cared more than i could recognize at the time. looking back, i can see how grief can twist your thoughts, it convinces you to stay quiet, to sit in your pain instead of reaching out. i wish i had been more honest about what was really happening and gotten myself the help i needed. but that’s the thing about writing music, it captures a moment in time. listening now, i feel relieved to be past it, but grateful that it still exists for anyone who might need to hear it and feel a little less alone!”
Ella first gained attention at the age of 16 with the release of her 2018 debut project, ‘Black Wave Diary’, which received widespread acclaim. Since then she’s amassed thousands of streams and continues to win fans with each new single.
